Induction Day - 2012

On Monday 2nd July 2012 8.30-3.00 we have our Induction Day. This is for all our new students who wish to start at college in September 2012.

Each person who has applied and been offered a place is invited to attend the personalised timetable of their chosen subjects. This will be posted out in June.

The Induction Day gives our new students the opportunity to find out what a day at college is like, to meet our staff and learn more about the subjects and to begin to make the friendships they will build on for the coming two years.

Achievers Celebration

We were delighted at our Awards Evening to welcome back our achievers from the class of 2009 to 2011.

This was the first cohort of students from the college to complete their A-level courses and it was wonderful to meet them all again. All the students were presented with their Examination Certificates. Awards were also made for Achievement or Endeavour in each subject. Further to this there were Awards from the Principal for the particularly outstanding contributions of 3 students to the life of our College.

The change of category of South Sefton Sixth Form College to Foundation status

The governing body of South Sefton Sixth Form College is considering a change of category to become a Foundation school in line with the Government’s plans for a reformed system of strong, autonomous schools and a modernised role for local authorities.

The decision to change category resides entirely with the governing body. However, we are committed to considering the views of all interested parties and we explain below how you may make your views known.

There are certain key differences between a Foundation school and a Community school. In a Foundation school the governing body has formal ownership of the assets (land and buildings); the governing body is the direct employer of the school’s staff and is the admission authority.

As a member of staff your employment rights are protected by Education Regulations which came into force in May 2007. This means that you would transfer to the new employer under terms and conditions of employment that are no less favourable than those currently in place. Your pension rights and continuity of service record will be preserved.

Our college and governing body are committed to exercising the increased autonomy which Foundation status brings, within the framework of fair funding and fair admissions. Foundation status is intended to promote innovation and educational entrepreneurship by giving school and college leaders more freedom to decide how best to meet the needs of their students, parents and wider communities. They also have increased flexibility to maximise the use of their assets.

As the admission authority we are committed to serving the local community and we would have to “act in accordance with” the Code of Practice for admissions. If we decide to become a Foundation school we will consult on our proposed admission policy within the timescales in the Code. Until this process is completed admissions into our college will be under the same oversubscription criteria as are operating now.

Our relationship and collaborative working with our partner schools and other partnerships will continue in the same way as now.

Our most recent Ofsted report stated that, “The ambition to turn the college into an outstanding institution pervades everything it does”. We see Foundation status as being a key component in our future development as we intend to use this as a platform from which to “re-energise” the whole college community and focus on the best ways to further raise standards for our students. By acquiring Foundation status we will be able to share experiences with other institutions across the country and learn from each other as we develop strategies and processes for improvement. Our commitment to local partnerships will remain and we will be actively seeking to maximise the benefits that these bring to us.

The additional freedoms open to us as a Foundation college and our commitment to co-operation with other agencies will, we believe, be an important component in our development of these initiatives. Some important things would not change if we were to acquire foundation status:

The governing body would still have elected parent and staff governors. Any governor in a category existing in the Foundation school governing body would have the right to complete their term of office on the Foundation school GB if they so wished. This would give us some continuity of governors.
We would continue to be funded according to the agreed LA scheme in the same way as all other schools in the LA.
We would still be an important part of the local community of schools and would have the opportunity through the Admission Forum and Schools Forum to contribute to local decisions.

This letter is part of our informal consultation. The next step will be a meeting of the governing body on Thursday 22^nd March 2012 to consider any responses to this letter and make a decision about continuing with the process. The consultation process ends on Wednesday 21^st March 2012 and all responses must be received by that date.

Legal Eagles Take Flight For New York

Ten A-level Law students from South Sefton Sixth Form College are about to embark on the trip of a lifetime when they jet off stateside to compare the legal systems of the United States with those of the UK. The students will be visiting New York for six days and will be looking at the UN Headquarters and the New York Police Museum. They will spend a day at Brooklyn Law School campus and another day with US attorneys from the law firm, Duane Morris, to see a case in action in a New York court as the guests of Phi Delta Phi, the law fraternity of one of the college governors, Ian Scott.

The College is delighted to have this strong link with Phi Delta Phi whose total inititiated membership exceeds 200,000 people. More judges, governors, senators, representatives, cabinet members, ambassadors, American Bar Association presidents, Association of American Law School presidents and law school Deans have come from the ranks of Phi Delta Phi than from any other legal fraternity.

However, it won’t be all work and no play for these lucky students! They will also have a taste of life in the Big Apple, taking in the sights and sounds of Manhattan with visits to the Empire State Building and a theatre show on Broadway. They will also pay their respects at the recently opened 9/11 Memorial Museum and enjoy a meal at The Hard Rock Café in Times Square.

Prospective students will have an opportunity to find out more about the Legal Eagles’ visit if they come to the College Open Evening at 5.30-7.30pm on Thursday 22^nd March.

Top achievers!

We were delighted to receive the A-level results of our first year of students. We were thrilled that our students’ performance puts us in the top 2% for A-level achievement nationally.

This is the findings of the A-Level Performance System (ALPS), an independent body, which compared the A-level results from 1,127 schools and colleges across the country.

ALPS measures the value-added achieved by students. The value-added compares what you expect the student to get at A-level (based on what the student got in GCSEs or similar courses, such as BTec) to what s/he actually gets. A student with a high value-added is one who has achieved more than expected.

Our students did outstandingly well and this is a credit to them and their hard work and determination as well as to the support and commitment of all our dedicated staff.

Open Evening - March 2012

On Thursday 22nd March 2012 from 17.30 to 19.30 we will be hosting an open evening giving you the chance to take a look around our fantastic brand new building and the amazing resources we have here for our A level students. There will be musical, dance and drama performances throughout the evening, featuring our performing arts, dance and music students, taking place in our beautiful spacious atrium.

All classrooms will be open and teachers and students will be demonstrating a variety of A Level subjects including Spanish (complete with delicious Spanish Tapas), Biology (with a chance to see some practical dissections...not for the squeamish) and Film & Media Studies (showing short films made by our very own Speilbergs). No appointment is necessary and there are parking facilities around the rear of the building with access to the building via the front entrance. This a fantastic opportunity to see what everyone is talking about...the most technically advanced college in Merseyside.

Celebrate Christmas with South Sefton Sixth Form College

Tuesday 13th December sees our annual Christmas Carol Concert with an evening of dance, music, drama and traditional carols. The evening begins at 7:00 and there will be tea, coffee and mince pies served afterwards. Please join us to celebrate the season at this magical time of year.

Induction Day, on July 4th 2011 - Experience your new college for the first time

Induction Day is the time when prospective students experience their new college for the first time.The purpose of the day is to discover what your A level options are all about, what each course involves and whether each fulfils your initial expectations. In addition to meeting your new teachers and everyone else who has applied, you will be able to enjoy the facilities available, familiarise yourself with the college and be ready to make the best start possible in September. Food and refreshments will be available throughout the day so the only thing to remember to bring is yourself!

The day will begin at 08:45 and finish at 15:30. Please send a quick email to admissions@sssfc.ac.uk if you are able to attend.

Office365 is coming soon

After the Easter break the college will be implementing a brand new Email system which allows students to group their college email and personal email accounts together as well as share photos online, track deadlines with an interactive calendar and have access to a whopping 25Gb of personal file storage space in the 'Cloud'. It promises to be a major upgrade in the online organisational tools available to our students. Using these tools will also give you a headstart at University or in the workplace where Office365 will soon become the industry standard.

The Wizard Of Oz

Following the success of our production of Little Shop Of Horrors, we are now holding auditions for the latest show...The Wizard of Oz. There are a variety of parts in the performance as well as behind the scenes roles...Interested? Then see Ian Driver. The performance will take place in April and all enthusiastic volunteers are welcome.

Year 13 Trip to France

Grey skies and heavy rain failed to dampen the spirits of a group of students as they set off for a short visit to Paris, with a view to consolidating their language skills developed throughout their AS course, furthering their knowledge of the “Ile de France” region, studied at A2, and of course, spending some time in one of the world’s most beautiful and remarkable cities.

Drama & Performance Studies enjoy a trip to the theatre

The thrill of live performance is something that is hard to beat and already this term our students have seen some of the best plays to be staged in the region. Students were fortunate enough recently to see Kim Caterall, of Sex and the City fame, star in the well reviewed Liverpool Empire production of Shakespeare’s, Antony and Cleopatra. Closer to home students saw the ever popular Blood Brothers starring ex Spice Girl Mel C who gave a stunning performance in this classic tale of two brothers separated at birth.

As well as these two classic plays, students also traveled to Bolton to see a stirring production of Tennessee William’s, A Street Car Named Desire and to Manchester for the Royal Exchange’s ground breaking production of Marlowe’s, Dr Faustus.
