Courses - General Studies & Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking

Critical Thinking is an A-level course offered to our high achievers. It is taught at AS level for one lesson per week throughout the year. It therefore enables you gain more A-level points for university and beyond. It develops in you the skills of constructing arguments and, as such, is very beneficial to those who will have a career in putting the case for or against some issue: in science, law, media, history, business and politics, to mention just a few.

The study of critical thinking will equip you with reasoning skills to use in life, work and further academic study. It provides opportunities for you to think deeply, and in a structured way, about issues that are key to participating in society, e.g. ethical questions, cultural issues and issues of personal responsibility. It enables you to make reasoned decisions that are based on evidence and argument rather than assumption and prejudice.

You will be involved in examining current issues so that you may:

* analyse arguments
* judge the relevance and significance of information
* evaluate claims, inferences, arguments and explanations
* construct clear and coherent arguments
* form well-reasoned judgments and decisions.
