Why choose Music Technology?

Course ImageTechnology has had a massive impact on the music industry and this course enables you to gain skills used in the industry. You will arrange and produce your own pieces and will explore the development of music technology in popular music.

What can I expect to learn?

During the course you will learn about how technology can help in composition and how a recording studio operates. You will have the opportunity to compose, sequence and arrange using recording equipment and software such as Sibelius Protools. You will also study the social, cultural and historical impact of music technology with particular reference to popular music, jazz, and music for the moving image.

How will I learn?

You will learn through listening to and exploring popular music and jazz. You will learn how technology has been used in music and will try these techniques for yourself. You will have lots of practical sessions and workshops using the recording studio and computer facilities, and you will become confident at writing about music. You will receive instrumental lessons to improve your practical skills and will be able to go to concerts and trips to meet other musicians. To help you learn you will have access to our brand new recording studio and specialist music computers and practice rooms with high quality instruments.

How will I be assessed?

AS -
Music Technology Portfolio (a multitracked recording, a sequenced performance, and a sequenced arrangement) Listening and Analysing Exam

A2 -
Music Technology Portfolio 2 Analysing and Producing Exam Two-thirds of the subject is coursework based. Listening and Analysing is assessed in late May and is the only formal written examination.

What subjects combine well with Music Technology?

Music technology combines well with maths and physics if you are considering studying it at university but it can be taken with most subjects.

Where does this lead? What can I do next?

As well as preparing you for a music technology course at university, it is also beneficial for careers in music production or sound engineering. It can also lead to opportunities in education and the performing arts industry. Success at music technology A Level highlights your self-discipline, commitment and creativity, alongside showing you can work well by yourself and as part of a team.

What background, skills and achievements do I need?

GCSE Music at grade C is preferable but not essential. The ability to read and play standard musical notation is a pre-requisite.
